Over 70 million Americans keep themselves safe by verifying their identity through ID.me as AI fraud accelerates

As deepfakes and AI fraud threaten online trust, Americans turn to ID.me for secure, simple sign-in and protection from fraud and scams
McLean, VA, April 8, 2025 — As deepfakes and AI-driven fraud threaten the digital landscape, ID.me today announced over 70 million Americans chose ID.me to make it safer and easier to sign in and prove their identity online. The number of Americans who used ID.me to verify their identity to the federal standards for authentication represents nearly half of the 145 million users who rely on their ID.me digital wallet to keep themselves safe while transacting online.
These 70 million users can use their ID.me digital wallet to securely sign in and and prove their identity at any government, commercial, or non-profit organization that accepts ID.me and complies with NIST AAL2/IAL2 standards for fraud prevention.
“Managing multiple sign-ins is frustrating. With the rise of fraud and generative AI scams, the internet is increasingly less safe. ID.me solves both problems with a simple, secure login you can use across any website where ID.me is accepted. Our vision is for your ID.me sign-in to be the last one you ever need. We’re making life safer and easier,” said Blake Hall, Founder and CEO of ID.me.
The rise of AI-powered identity theft
Identity fraud is a national security crisis. In the wake of the pandemic, an estimated $280 billion in U.S. unemployment benefits was stolen by fraudsters, with at least half funneled to overseas networks in Russia, China, and Nigeria. A senior official of the FBI called this “an economic attack on the United States.”
The FTC published that reports of fraud, identity theft, and related issues grew from 2.1 million to 5.4 million between 2013-2023. Volumes rose significantly over the latter five years, correlating with increased sophistication of AI and deepfakes. The last 24 months have seen an explosion of AI-driven attacks targeting identity systems. iProov, a leading biometric security provider specializing in deepfake protection, reported a sharp rise in attack vectors from 2023 to 2024: face swap deepfake attacks surged by 300%, image and video injection attacks rose 783%, and virtual camera attacks skyrocketed 2,665%. Without reliable identity verification, these threats will only grow.
ID.me: A trusted partner for governments, business and individuals
ID.me’s NIST-certified technology helps organizations detect and prevent these attacks—closing the gaps AI fraudsters exploit. ID.me is the only digital wallet that meets NIST AAL2/IAL2 standards while offering identity verification options across online self-service, live video chat, and in-person channels. During the pandemic, seven states credited ID.me with helping prevent over $270 billion in fraud. The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) saw transformative results in serving Virginians: 173% increase in claims filed online; 57% reduction in call center volume; 9,300 staff hours saved; appeals backlog cut from 135,000 cases to 1,200 cases.
Simpler access, more control for consumers
For individuals, ID.me eliminates sign-in and verification friction, such as managing multiple logins and repeatedly uploading identity documentation, and gives users control of their data and privacy. Pre-verified users experience a 99%+ pass rate signing in across sites, and from Q3 2023 through Q3 2024, this group grew by 31%, saving an estimated 222 years of collective time annually.
With a commitment to “No identity left behind,” ID.me offers flexible options to serve all Americans, including citizens living overseas, tribal communities, unhoused individuals, and those without credit history. For example, Puerto Rico saw a jump in verification pass rates from 23.9% to 78.6%—a three-fold increase compared to a legacy data broker solution.
“The ID.me button signals fast, easy access for everyone–including vulnerable communities” said Hall. “We’re closing gaps for tens of millions left behind by data brokers and building a more inclusive digital future.”
