Tell us about your ID.me journey. What initially attracted you to the role?

When I applied for this role, ID.me had recently partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help veterans securely access their benefits online. That real-world impact immediately captured my interest and reinforced how meaningful the mission was.

I was also drawn to the opportunity to support a Founder-CEO. It’s a role that demands trust, discretion, strategic thinking, adaptability, and a sense of humor — strengths I bring instinctively and have strengthened over time.

Before joining ID.me, I spent twelve years on Capitol Hill working for two Members of Congress from my home state of Florida. That experience taught me how to operate in high-pressure, fast-moving environments where preparation, sound judgment, and discretion are critical — skills that translated seamlessly into supporting Blake.

On a more personal note, I had taken ten years off to raise my children before returning to the workforce. The job posting described a high-performing culture and outlined ID.me’s cultural values. Seeing values like “Don’t be a jerk” and “Inspire people with your passion” immediately stood out to me. After being away from the professional world for a decade, I was looking for a place where I could step back in thoughtfully and make a meaningful impact. ID.me seemed like a perfect fit.

What stood out to you during the interview process?

I’ll never forget my interview with Blake. I was in the middle of answering a question when he suddenly started laughing. I had no idea why — until I realized that behind me, an employee who had graduated from the University of Florida was doing the “Gator chomp.” I quickly glanced back, and as a longtime Florida State University fan, I kept answering the question while doing the Seminole chop.

It broke the tension immediately. That moment captured something special about ID.me and about Blake — serious about the mission, but still human and able to have fun. Nine years later, that balance still holds true.

What are your primary responsibilities day to day?

No two days are the same. I manage complex executive scheduling, coordinate board and leadership activities, support executive communications, and help ensure follow-through on strategic initiatives.

A core part of my role is anticipation — thinking several steps ahead, identifying potential friction points, and proactively resolving issues before they surface. I partner closely with leaders across the company to maintain alignment and momentum around the CEO’s priorities.

How does knowing the end user influence your work?

Knowing who we serve brings a deep sense of responsibility to everything I do. Our end users are real people — veterans accessing their hard-earned benefits, Medicare recipients securely logging in to Medicare.gov, frontline workers receiving the discounts they deserve, and so many others who rely on us each and every day.

Even though my work happens behind the scenes, I’m constantly aware that executive alignment and strong decision-making ultimately affect those individuals. It reinforces the importance of preparation, precision, and follow-through. When the mission protects people’s identities and safeguards access to critical services, the details truly matter.
After nine years, that sense of purpose still motivates me. Contributing to a mission that strengthens trust — and protects real people — makes even the busiest days meaningful.

Joan’s dedication to alignment, preparation, and follow-through strengthens the foundation of our organization. We’re proud to have team members like her who help translate strategy into meaningful impact.
